17 Feb Major Steam build update
We have some good news for all our PC gamers: we have updated the Steam version of Among the Sleep!
Important game save info:
The updated version of the game can not read your old save files. But don’t worry, you will not lose anything by updating. If you do not want to use the updated version, you can switch back by opting into the legacy “beta” branch in the properties of the game in Steam. The save files in the old and new version are saved in different locations on your computer, so both will stay intact.
If you want to update the game but not start the entire story over, there’s a neat little trick you can do. Under the controls tab in the options menu, bind “console” to a convenient key of your liking. Then, you can use the console to load in the different levels – unlocking them in the Chapter Selection.
The console command used to load levels is two lower case “L” – short for Load Level – followed by a space and the name of the level you want to load.
The names of the levels are: Level00, Level01, Level02, Level03, Level04 and Level06_pre
So if you wanted to load the third chapter, the command would be: ll Level03
Another important notice: If you want to play the game with the Oculus Rift DK1 you have to use the old version of the game, as this feature did not survive the switch to Unity 5.
Tweaks and tinkering
In December we released an updated version of Among the Sleep for the PlayStation 4. We upgraded to Unity 5, tweaked the sound, did a lot of optimization and fixed bugs until near insanity. Now we’re finally ready to push this update to Steam as well!
All the optimization that was done to make the game run at 60fps on PS4 will also benefit the Steam version. The game should run a lot smoother on lower end computers, which we are very happy about! This also means a lot faster loading times.
The new version also includes a commentary track where we comment on various aspects of the game, like sources of inspiration, ideas that never made it into the game and other ups and downs related to game development. This means you can now get some inside information about our work, and also hear our voices! – Hi! The commentary track can be activated in the Options menu.
Fresh and updated sound system and ambience
We have fixed several issues in our audio system and tightened the screws on the soundscape in general, making it an overall better and more unified experience. We have also taken special care to add a few goodies for those of you with surround sound systems (Look behind you!).
Originally we planned to have collectable drawings spread across the game…and now we do! You can collect these for some shiny new achievements!
Developer used bug spray, it got in his eyes
We have also fixed a lot of bugs! This is really a thorn in the game developers foot: fixing one bug often results in discovering (or creating) another one. It is a never ending story, especially fueled by our upgrade to Unity 5. Big and small, old and new; bugs were squashed (to the point where our technical artist would rather jump out the window). So we think it’s good now!
Also, we enabled cloud saving! We asked our programmer about it and he said he found a button, so he pushed it, and it works! Yay!
As you might have noticed the Xbox One version of Among the Sleep is taking it’s time. We can see the finish line now, so please be patient for a little while longer and we’ll get it out to you very soon!
