Wow! It’s barely been a day since we published the first ever gameplay video from Among the Sleep, and its reception has already blown us away. With all-over positive feedback and articles on amongst others Edge, Destroctoid, Jostiq, PCgamer, IngieGames, Gameinformer, RockPaperShotgun, Kotaku, Gamespy and Eurogamer (and the list goes on) – this is an incredible motivational boost for us! Even Cliff Bleszinski and Jim Sterling has been hyping the project on their twitter.

I guess we should use this moment to clarify a few misconceptions that’s been forming though. Firstly, you will not be crawling 100% of the time; this is mostly something you choose to do (to reach places and hide from dangers etc.). Also, it is not going to be released during 2012 – we are working towards a release in 2013. And finally, to some of you silly people, it’s not a first person shooter. There will be no guns, we are untruly sorry.

    The game is looking great, guys! I have a pretty subpar PC, and I normally don’t bother with PC titles because of it, but your game has me intrigued and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it. :)

    I love the childhood-horror genre, and it’s wonderful to see a game that explores it. In the video, there was silhouette darting across the window of the front door; I do hope there are more little touches like that, in the game. Small, creepy details are the best part of a horror game, for me.

    Finally, a horror game that looks like actual HORROR… I’m really sick and tired of all the movies and games that rely on blood-and-guts to freak people out. Well written horror doesn’t need to be gory, and for people like me who have really bad anxiety problems surrounding blood and gore, it’s difficult to find movies and games that don’t have much of that while still being a psychological thrill.

    Assuming this game doesn’t have a bunch of gore, I can’t wait to play it! :)

    After seeing a friend post the trailer on Facebook, i can say i am really hyped about this game and to see more gameplay footage.

    True Horror games play upon your mind, the fact you play as an innocent (not necessarily) child, without any way to defend him/herself with creatures/shadows/monsters around and an interactable enviroment is FANTASTIC! From what we’ve seen, it could amount to anything, but for me,a true horror focuses on the atmosphere and inabiltiy to fight back, such as Amnesia the Dark Descent.

    I really am looking forward to seeing how this game comes out. Kudos to you guys!

    The atmosphere in the game is DEAD ON TARGET. I definitely feel like the best horror plays on my mind, and not my aversion to gore. Little creepy details definitely spook me more than buckets of blood. Keep up the good work, this is a game I look forward to playing.

      We are afraid that hearing the child to much (like crying) will pull the player out of the experience, as this might feel more imposed than immersive for the adults playing. We are still experimenting with this though, so it might change! :)

        Hearing the child gasp when something scary happens (I think that was in the demo) or perhaps whimpering after a nasty fall (or injury) would be pretty cool though

    I really like the idea of having shadows play part in this game. Seeing your self shadow, would add a lot, not to mention using shadows of the monsters to scare people. Maybe seeing a shadow from underneath a doorway. I really think this could help immerse the gamer into this game!

    Brilliant stuff! Very inspiring, can’t wait to see more speedpaints/gameplay. You guys should set up a donation page if you haven’t already, I’d imagine a lot of people would be interested in supporting this project.

      We would love to support Linux, but because we use the Unity3d-engine, we are unfortunately limited by their support. The Unity team has discussed adding Linux support to the engine though, so this might change! (But probably not for some time)

    Wow, this is certainly one to keep an eye on! Question: is this running on the HPL Engine 2 or an in-house engine? That hand icon toward the end of the video where you face the fridge seemed quite reminiscent of Amnesia.

    Looking good, can’t wait to see where this goes! 😀

        Unity 3D works pretty awesome! And it’s pretty easy to get started on using!
        Although it does get tricky at certain areas
        And is a tough nut to crack when it comes to those certain areas

    Looks scarier already than the last 3 or 4 Silent Hill games. For whatever reason, many American/Western developers insist on showing us the pixellated face of evil chasing us in all its hi-res glory, and have completely forgotten that the “unknown” is much scarier. This game seems to combine the unknown with the innocence and defenselessness of a child… yeah, I’m excited. Just don’t make us protect a poorly coded NPC AI like the girl sidekick in Resident Evil 4 and I’m all over this.

    Hearing the baby at least a little (like in the gameplay vid) definitely adds a lot to the game! Hearing the baby cry at least a tiny bit at one point of the game would be amazing as it would add major creepyness in my opinion :)

        That’s exactly the answer I was hoping for! This is definitely one of the most refreshing concepts I’ve seen for a game in a -long- time. I wonder why it is that the best horror games come out of Norway… (Amnesia)

    The gameplay teaser trailer has got that feeling of the Ocean Manor mission in Vampire: the Masquerade Bloodlines and a bit of sneaking around the shalebridge cradle mission from thief deadly shadows. I’m really looking forward to this game.

    Have you seen this youtube video of hide and seek from a toddler perspective? It made me think of your trailer, but also shed some light on how you might modify gameplay to make it more toddler like (the tremendous bob when running, the not quite controlled spin and head turns, etc.)

    This looks very promising IMO and I was a fan at first sight when I saw this video. I’ve posted this a few times now on some other sites, and the replies are few and far between (but overall positive at least) and now I just want to give my opinion on it though.

    Really for anyone who isn’t impressed I ask you this, consider the type of perspective a child has in this world and in general just look back at what your childhood was like if you want an idea on how this game could be amazing if it was done right.

    To get an idea of what I mean there all I’m asking is this; what frightened you as a kid? Chances are a lot might have scared you I bet! For example, I remember being afraid of thunder one time. As in one time I was at a window looking outside at the rain and then ran away from the window screaming because of how loud some thunder was that just went off “close” to me.

    I’m not proud of this one but I also remember being afraid of being sucked down the toilet’s drain for some reason. Like I would use the toilet then run away screaming after flushing it!

    Yes I was sort of a wimpy kid.

    I have some thoughts if you guys don’t mind my posting them. Again my point is: part of me thinks this game could be great if it played on various childhood fears. Think for example of actually finding a monster under your bed or needing a nightlight in order to drive away a monster or something like that would be for game play? I would love the idea of a panic mode as well even. For example if it is going off your controls and/or screen can get messed up or in general you’ll just trip and such. And just think of the stuff that could control this meter, such as sucking a pacifier/thumb considering how the kid is 2?

    Really the list goes on with what this game could be like and I hope it is awesome.

      first of all, that is a really good example, but just to point it out, there is alot of people who don’t remember their childhood, and mostly because of psychological trauma of the childhood nightmares, some of them are really horrible, even watching a slight horror movie will give a 2 year old MASSIVE nightmares, but I do agree with you, it will be fun to play as a child, having fun playing a child horror, I just hope there is no ceiling crawlers in this game… because the only part of MY childhood I remember is a nightmare with some freaky thing crawling along the ceiling and STARING at me… things like that immediately start to get me sweaty with nervousness in horror films because I keep recalling that, but yeah Among The Sleep is one of the things I will absolutely buy when I can.

      Thanks for the kind words! We chose to prioritize our resources on production this time around, and didn’t get to travel to E3. It will be one continuous story (with chapters), not an endless night or a series of nights a’la Lone Survivor.

    please, no crying! that would just be annoying, and ruining the whole atmosphere because of the fact that the player is an adult! whimpering and very very silent and short cries is okay, though. :) and this is a grown baby/child, not an infant. i remember when i was around that age, if i was afraid of something, i tried my best not to make any sounds or noises whatsoever, so that the monster couldn’t find me!

But at the moment we still think it’s a bit early for us, because there is a fair share of production left and we dont want to be distracted, hehe.

    this game is just so epic, I never felt so scared after watching a trailer in my life, and I normally watch horror trailers at midnight with the lights off, fullscreened and almost 100% volume so the littliest creepy sound can be heard, and normally I don’t get scared but all I can say is that when I watched your trailer… I am glad I decided to go to the washroom first before watching, but yeah this game is something I will buy and if I love it as much as I think I will then I’ll buy my two friends a copy and we’ll all play in a dark room, computers next to each other and our headsets on MAX volume… we will not be able to sleep for several weeks… better pack 6 cases of redbull… ’cause I have been stalking the forum hoping to see another trailer for… weeks I guess? 2013 why couldn’t you come quicker!? oh and keep up the good work guys, I don’t care if it’s 80$ I will buy it as soon as it comes out.

    THISS!!!!!!! I’ve been wondering when a game like this would be available. And the tone of it and all is picture perfect. Please make this as scary and horrifying as possible. With so many brand name junk out there already I think this is in a league all its own!!! Slenderman and Cry of fear are childs play in comparison to this. Heres a idea for you guys since I have missed my chance to be an awesome game developer and designer like yourselves. I’ve always wanted to see a “ghost hunting / paranormal First person-Experience is this type of gameplaying mechanics, maybe staged in a big hotel, old run down warehouse or even a church. And where every time a player sets off in a house the experience of ghost/demon/paranormal activity is random and always different. THAT right there if ‘done correct’ with no cheesy scary music just the surrounding ambiance of creepy environment alone would scare the living Sh**!!!! out everyone. But this game you guys are currently making is my hellish nightmare come true… so please continue on.. I wait patiently

    I just watched the trailer and was BLOWN THE F AWAY!!!! I did however notice one debatable disappointment* while watching the in game trailer the part where your enter the kitchen and right before the kitchen drawers and everything start moving I noticed a hand mouse Icon, which is not bad by any means what i really hope this game is a (REAL FREE ROAMING)first person game, not some Point-and-click movement interactive thing like the 7th guest was waaaaay back in the DOS days, pre-rendered grafx can only be done so many times before it that tech can be officially called out dated! But i hope i’m wrong and this game plays I’m thinking. Is game may easily be one of the best survival horror games to watch for. I hope their will be expansion levels and puzzles, this game just screams so much potential is not even funny… no pun intended.

    It looks veryyy interesting and scary. It looks like the baby son of Amnesia. I’ve played lot of pc horror games like silent hill, amnesia, scratches, penumbra,dark fall,darkness within are my favs. When will it be launched? Where is the pre-order button?

    are you guys planning to have a level editor/maker so people can make and share levels that they made themselves? with customized special scare zones and such? I was wondering because then while it would increase the amount of time before it was released it would add alot more gameplay and also allow an even bigger community to form, infact you could also add a page on the AtS project site for Custom Maps/stories, and if you did it would be amazing because it would mean the game would get played alot longer, because while a good game is fun to play there isn’t much to do afterwards except replay it and that gets boring really quickly, just a suggestion to your amazing team.

    As far as horror games go, what this seems to be doing is exploring the meaning of horror. What is horror? It’s in the eye of the beholder, and that’s the genius I think of using a 2 year old as the avatar. Exploring what horror is to a 2 year old is an immensely intriguing idea– one that I would’ve ever have thought of if I’d been a 2 year old 100 times over. Brilliant concept guys! I can’t wait to play this, and I love what it suggests for the future of the gaming medium!
